Flow of exchanges in the Safari browser
- The buyer validates their shopping cart by clicking the Pay button.
- The buyer is redirected to the payment page.
- The buyer selects Apple Pay.
If the buyer is not on the Safari browser or other compatible tools (see Apple’s documentation on compatibility), the Apple Pay button will not be offered as a payment method.
- The browser displays the Apple Pay pop-up.
- The buyer logs in and chooses their payment card to proceed with the payment. The connection is done according to the Apple limitations (Face ID, Fingerprint, ...).
- Apple Pay retrieves the information from the card, then sends the response to the gateway.
Since Apple Pay is already capable of handling payments that have built-in biometric authentication, it is fully compatible with strong customer authentication. The authentication is implicit and is managed between Apple and the issuer.
- The payment gateway makes an authorization request, then notifies the merchant website of the transaction result.
- The payment gateway displays the payment receipt, then redirects the buyer to the shop. The merchant displays the order confirmation page.
